Hariz’s Story – Level 3

(Level 2 and Level 3 stories are the same, but the exercises are different.)

When I came to Australia five years ago I never believed I would be able to study and work in my occupation here. It seemed an impossible dream. I had just begun studying a course in Drafting in Bosnia. I’d like to tell you about how I learnt English and returned to study in Australia.

My first step was a Certificate 2 English course at Dandenong AMES. I learnt quickly and after only one term I had finished Certificate 2 and started Certificate 3 in a Further Study class – that is, English for people who want to start or return to study in Australia . This course was just what I needed. I learnt the kind of English necessary to survive at university – we developed our reading and listening skills, gave oral presentations and practised writing essays and reports. We spent three hours every week in the computer room, learning to use the computer for word processing. We also wrote our resumes and job application letters on the computer to prepare us for the Practical Placement Program. In this program you go out for work experience for two weeks. I worked in an architect’s office in the city. It was a great experience! I was so worried that my English wouldn’t be good enough, but the people were very encouraging and I would recommend it to anyone.

During this course I saw the AMES Educational Counsellor who gave me a lot of information about university and TAFE courses. After discussion with the Counsellor, I decided I would do a Diploma in Building Design and Construction when I finished studying at AMES.

I have finished my 510 hours at AMES. Now I am studying for my Diploma at a TAFE college and so far everything is going OK. I think I’m half way to my "impossible dream". But I still have to get that job!

A LUCKY COUNTRY

Australia is a country which is located south of Asia and to the north of Antarctica. It has very nice weather although it can get very hot in summer, especially in the northern regions. It is surrounded by oceans on all fronts and so does not share a border with any other country.

Australians are people who love to gamble in every way. They spend huge amounts on lotto, horses, dogs, poker machines etc. Also, they are people who love animals and Australia has the highest ratio of pet owners in the world. Unfortunately, it is also a place where many dangerous animals live and are actually protected by the government, e.g. crocodiles, snakes, dogs and others. Because these animals are protected people are fined or even imprisoned if they kill a protected animal.

Finally, Australia is one of many countries which takes in refugees and gives financial assistance to less fortunate countries. It is a member of the United Nations and takes its role seriously. It has been involved in many wars, but is one of the few countries which has never had a war on its own territory.
Yes, Australia is definitely a lucky country.

THE US Navy's oldest active duty warship brought about 5000 American sailors and $10 million worth of tourism spending into Fremantle port this morning.Giant aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk docked at about 10am for what US officials described as a routine rest and relaxation visit.The 45-year-old conventionally-powered carrier, which is 61m tall above the waterline and carries about 5000 staff, joins the cruiser USS Cowpens and destroyer USS Russell.

Einfeld's lawyers to reveal driver10th August 2006, 16:45 WSTLawyers for former Federal Court judge Marcus Einfeld say they hope to reveal in coming days who was driving his car when it was caught speeding in Sydney. Mr Einfeld has denied misleading a court to avoid a speeding fine after his car was caught by a speed camera in Sydney on January 8.
The elite NSW Police State Crime Command has been called in to investigate whether he gave false evidence in the case over a $77 speeding fine. The speeding charge against Mr Einfeld was dismissed in the Downing Centre Local Court on Monday after he said he had loaned his car that day to an old friend, US-based academic Professor Teresa Brennan, who had since died.
It later emerged that a Professor Teresa Brennan died after a car accident in the United States in 2003. Mr Einfeld's barrister, Winston Terracini, said Thursday he and solicitor Michael Ryan had made contact with someone in the US within the past 24 hours.
"Mr Ryan and Mr Terracini have been in contact with a person in the United States," Mr Terracini said in a statement to AAP. "They hope to be in a position in the next few days to reveal the details of the actual driver."
Mr Terracini said in the meantime, Mr Einfeld would be willing to cooperate with any investigation. "When the appropriate officers contact Mr Ryan and Mr Terracini we will make an appropriate response," he said.
Mr Einfeld said of misconduct by police and Mr Einfeld had never served as a police officer.

EXPECTATIONS
To find out how to create a blog and how to use it usefully for students’ computing session.

IMPRESSIONS
Was successful in getting a blog with a photo taken earlier in the session. Even though I was shown how to post new comments I can’t really remember and it’s just trial and error.
This was a very useful practical session where I learnt something new, which is so much better than repeating things I already know.

SUGGESTIONS
For me more instruction and practice on posting new comments and pictures. I need more individual instruction although I realise with the number of participants that would be difficult.
